In June 2010, Agape Learning Center hosted two Solar Lamp Assembly workshops. This was part of a program supported by the Danderyd Moshi Group in Sweden to bring solar lighting to rural villages.
The intention is that these initial solar lamp units will be sold to the local community at a subsidised price by our Swedish partners, while in Tanzania we are supposed to set up a micro financing system where the farmers will repay in installments, the money to be deposited in the SACCOS and later to be used for ordering more lamps.
The solar lamps had been chosen after consultations in Tanzania and Sweden had identified the most suitable design. The lamps which were manufactured in Germany were shipped as basic units requiring assembly – this kept the costs down and enabled the users here in Tanzania to develop skills in their construction and maintenance.
Two full day workshops were held with participants from Chekereni, Fukeni, Agape and Ihushi. All the solar lamps were assembled and the participants were able to get hands-on experience of each stage of the assembly. The young Swedish tutors and the local tutors did an excellent job of organizing the event and demonstrating the techniques
