History

Agape Learning Center was officially founded in July 2004 when its Certificate of Incorporation as a non-profit making NGO was granted. Located in Kiboriloni, opposite the Police Station on the Dar es Salaam Road, its purpose has been to provide training and services for the local community. “Training for Future” is the key promise.

The center’s origins go back to the previous year when the Rev Kennedy Kisanga was visiting colleagues at the Danderyd Church in Stockholm, Sweden. Discussion about the need for a local training center in Moshi took place and financial help was offered for the building and provision of equipment. The relationship with Sweden and the church at Danderyd has been a continuing one since then. Although Agape is autonomous and managed by Tanzanians for Tanzanians, the special relationship with Sweden has encouraged the community here and also, we believe, enriched our many Swedish visitors.

The center’s building has a total area of 328 sq meters. It comprises

  • office for administration
  • store room and library closed library
  • computer classroom
  • classroom/conference room
  • kindergarten classroom
  • kitchen and two utility rooms
  • secretarial bureau
  • internet café
  • graphics editing and server room
  • computer hardware repair and maintenance workshop
  • toilets and washrooms rooms
  • children’s playground and a parking lot

The computer class room is equipped for 25 students and the classroom/conference room can comfortably accommodate 45 participants. The internet cafe offers eight computers for use by the general public. All computers are networked, and all have the ability to access the internet when required.

Seminars are organized by Agape for different groups with the emphasis on building skills for poverty reduction and better family and health care. As well as the Agape seminars, the following organizations have hosted seminars and workshops at Agape

  • Land O’Lakes
  • M&S Coopers (T) Ltd.,
  • Tanzania Milk Processors Association,
  • East African Diaries Association Services,
  • CISCO Systems Inc. (USA)

Computer Training has been central to the goals of Agape since its foundation. We’ve been supported by some very able IT Tutors over the years and are also grateful for the help of Linus, our Swedish volunteer who has come to Agape on several occasions. He set up the original computer network and has continued to advise on technical issues.

Agape has a school computers programme which donates used computers to rural secondary schools. Since the progamme started, we have donated a total of 149 computers, 155 monitors, and 6 printers to nine different secondary schools:
